In one of the nicer parts of Sultanahmet, south of the Aya Sofia, quite a few reasonably priced places have opened up in restored old houses. Two of these are next to each other on Amiral Tafdil Sokak off Mimar Mehmet Aga Caddesi, called the Obelisk, and the Sumengen (Tel: 517 6869, Fax: 516 8282). Both are converted Ottoman houses, The Sumengen especially nice, with spacious, attractive rooms --with the trademark Ottoman-era sash windows with latticed screens-- a terrace with a sea view, and its own marble-lined hamam...
