24th International Istanbul Film Festival, organized by Ýstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts every year, is approaching with full speed. The festival will be full with some of the most striking, newest and top of the world-class films, special screenings, guest stars and talks with masters of the film directing business (Master Classes) from April 2nd to 17th, 2005.
There will be approximately 170 films launched this year. Much like the previous years, the films will be screened at Emek, Atlas, Sinepop, Beyoðlu Movie Theaters in Beyoðlu and the Rexx in Kadýköy.
12 films will compete in the "International Competition" and 10 in the "National Competition" of the festival. The international competition jury of the festival will be presided over by Jane Campion and will include prominent cineastes from all over the world.

As part of the festival’s many sections like the "Galas", "From the World Festivals" and "Young Stars of the Cinema World", the festival will once again give movie-lovers the chance to see the newest, the most outstanding and award-winning productions that came up during the past year in the world.
One of the most talked about films of the year 2004, Mike Leigh’s latest film, "Vera Drake" will be in the program of this year’s festival. The holder of the Golden Lion Award from 2004 Venice Film Festival, "Vera Drake" is nominated to three Academy Awards. The master of Chinese cinema, Wong Kar Wai‘s latest film, "2046" will be screened for the first time in the festival. The production of "2046" lasted 5 years, a spell of poesy and sentimentality.
An un-adapting director from the independent American cinema, Gregg Araki’s latest film, "Mysterious Skin" is a surprise in the Festival.
Director of "Trainspotting", "Shallow Grave" and "The Beach", Danny Boyle’s latest film, "Millions".
The latest film from one of the most creative directors of contemporary cinema-making, Todd Solondz: "Palindromes" followed the director’s much discussed film "Storytelling", one of the festival must-sees.
The "Tributes" section is meant to pay homage to selected films from the acclaimed directors of the world. This year, there will be 4 films each from the Irish director and author Neil Jordan who is the best known for his political films and Roman Polanski, the Polish-born French director and actor. The Turkish master director screened in this section will be Yavuz Turgul.
One of the surprise guests of the festival will be the maker of the French new novel ecole, the creator of the cine-novel genre and director, Alain-Robbe Grillet. He will appear in person in a master class. Also, 5 of his films underlining his cinema-making qualities will be screened as part of the "Tributes" section.
The "Unforgettable Directors" section is reserved for six films by Pietro Germi, the "Great Carpenter" as the great Italian director, Federico Fellini, defined him. The guest of "A Cult Figure" section will be John Waters, a master of independent cinema.
In the "Special Screenings" section of the festival, Buster Keaton’s "The General" will be accompanied by Akbank Chamber Orchestra at the CRR Concert Hall. In addition, George Fitzmaurice’s memorable silent film, "The Son Of The Sheikh" will be accompanied by the music of the Sarband Ensemble. Rudolph Valentino was the leading actor in this film.
Another remarkable section in this year’s festival will be the "Korean Cinema". This ecole has recently made a considerable improvement and received world-wide praise in many festivals. 7 selected Korean films will be screened. One of them will be "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance" by Chan-wook Park, the director of "Old Boy" that was screened and praised last year in the FilmEkimi. "Old Boy" was made "Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance". There will also be 2 films by Kim Ki Duk named "3-Iron" and "Samaritan Girl".
A new section "Coming of Age" is added to the festival this year. This section is dedicated to the world of youngsters and will consist of films focusing on the lives, problems and dreams of the youth. Lucrecia Martel’s "The Holy Girl", Maria Victoria Menis’ "El Cielito" and Fridirik Thor Fridiksson’s "Niceland" will be the highlights of this new section.
As part of the "Documentaries" section, "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky will come as a documentary film on the world-famous heavy-metal band, Metallica. This film is expected to attract music-lovers as well as movie-lovers. Furthermore, the festival will make a surprise for wine-lovers this year: A documentary on globalization in winemaking, Jonathan Nossitier’s "Mondovino".
The "Mined Zone" section appeals to cinefans of amazing and pioneering works of cinema. The surprise film in this section is a splendid trilogy / epic project on the life and era of Tulse Luper by Peter Greenaway.
Also there will br a surprise section named "Dystopia". This year, there will be a separate section devoted entirely to the "dystopia" concept that is more and more becoming an every-day issue in contemporary world of arts, intellectuality, literature and cinema. Renovated prints of Jean-Luc Godard’s "Week-end", George Lucas’ "THX1138" and Terry Gilliam’s "Brazil" are a few of the exciting films to be screened in this section.
