Turkish Delight...The Sun News

Fethiye-Ölüdeniz-Dead Sea

The sea is crystal clear and warm as you could wish for – perfect for swimming, snorkelling and sailing.

Welcome to sun-drenched southern Turkey and its enchanting Cleopatra Coast. The Queen Of The Nile, so it is said, bathed blissfully by the water’s edge here.

Some 2,000 years later it was my turn — accompanied by another great beauty, my wife.

We fled bleak and blustery Britain in September to enjoy four days of glorious sun.

Turkey Coast    Not everyone has time to take a whole week or two in the sun. So these new mini-breaks are perfect — and affordable.

Our hotel was in Fethiye, an attractive harbour town where locals are as warm as the weather.

It doesn’t have its own beach but a short bus ride takes you to arguably Turkey’s finest coastline.

What you sea is what you get — the fabled Blue Lagoon at Oludeniz.

Turkish Gulet Blue Cruise    It has sheltered, silvery sands where the only waves come from ice-cream sellers.

The area’s other popular beach is a shingly shore at Calis.

From Fethiye it’s a 25-minute trip by water taxi across the beautiful bay.

If you like, you can really push the boat out with a superb all-day sailing trip on a Turkish gulet.

This cruise takes in a dozen delightful islands with at least four swimming stops.

You will even be introduced to Cleopatra’s favourite cove (no, not Mark Antony).

Turkish Ceramics    It’s said that if you bathe here in the mineral-rich waters among the ancient ruins, you’ll end up looking ten years younger.

If that doesn’t work, you can always try a mud bath by the sea.

Locals reckon these are great for the skin and flock eagerly to these natural wonders.

Turkish Antiques    Away from the coast, Turkey is more traditional.

We took a safari truck trip into the hills where villagers stoically tend tobacco and maize crops.

Even the driving is slower, with our guide carefully avoiding crushing a tortoise crossing the road. And watch out for alligators — emblazoned on the shirts in Fethiye’s La Coste store.

Turkish Carpets Rugs Hereke     The town is overflowing with shops offering designer wear, jewellery, ceramics and carpets.

Estate agents also do a roaring trade in holiday villas and apartments.

Britons are by far their best customers. I was amazed at how many UK boats were docked in the marina by our hotel, the aptly named Yacht Plaza.

If you visit Turkey, you’ll be a millionaire — the pound in your pocket is worth about 2.6million Turkish lira.

Turkish Food    And prices are tourist-friendly. A typical dish such as lamb kebab costs £2.50 and a large lager about a quid.

These days more people than ever opt for “quickies” abroad to banish the blues.

With beautiful beaches and guaranteed sunshine, I know why.
